"An algorave is an event where people dance to music generated from algorithms, often using live coding techniques. The coders' screen is projected behind them, allowing a transparency rarely found in electronic music and for the audience to watch the process at work. Algoraves can include a range of styles: techno, jungle, house, ambient, and hardstyle, and the movement has been described as a meeting point of hacker philosophy, geek culture, and clubbing."
A one-off, outdoor event showcasing a new field of live, electronic music making – using code to generate and manipulate melodies and beats.
Artists: Sound School live coding club
Presented as part of Melbourne Music Week
Through a series of workshops at Signal, Sound School has introduced young artists to the world of the algorave, using code to generate beat driven music. Working with Alison Walker, participants have learned how to use algorithms to create and manipulate melodies and beats.
Now, as part of Melbourne Music Week, we take live coding to the rave outside the computer lab in a one off, outdoor event, giving audiences a rare opportunity to experience this new field of music-making.
